3 Language Facts from Professional Translators

The world is full of diverse and unique languages – with roughly 6,500 spoken languages existing today. From the musical sounds of the Japanese language to the romantic expressions of French, there is plenty to get excited about when it comes to researching different languages.

As a provider of certified translation services, Absolute Translations are passionate about languages and their uses. For over a decade, we have provided translation services for a variety of sectors including technical, medical and financial translation. Therefore, it’s important for us to understand the many differences between languages and their cultural nuances to ensure our client’s communication is accurate and delivers the correct message.

Here are three top facts about languages from the professional translators from Absolute Translations:

1. Only 5% of all Portuguese speakers live in Portugal – the majority live in Brazil. That’s right, there are over 200 million native Portuguese speakers in the world but only 10 million live in Portugal. The rest live in Brazil where Portuguese is also the official language.

2. People who speak Mandarin use both sides of the brain, whereas English speakers only use one. A study in 2003 found that speaking Mandarin Chinese requires you to use more brainpower than when speaking English. This has helped researchers understand how the brain processes languages.

3. In Sinhalese, the word ayubowan means good morning, good afternoon, good evening, goodnight and goodbye. It is often accompanied by joining your two hands together in a prayer-like manner and using the phrase.

Here at Absolute Translations, our expert linguists are passionate about their chosen languages. We have a network of qualified translators working around the world, speaking over 200 languages between them. As experts in their field, we can ensure our clients receive accurate and localised translations for their target audience.
