In today’s blog post, we wanted to discuss an important (and ever-increasing) interpreting service – court interpreting services. Our team of specialist interpreters have answered a few common questions people have had, when considering court interpreting services.
Across the world, we are increasingly seeing a widespread acceptance of different cultures and languages. This is particularly true in the United Kingdom where over four million people of the population of 66 million, do not speak English as their primary language. Out of these four million people, they are most likely to speak Polish, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati.
The acceptance of languages and cultures expands far deeper from our day-to-day lives. With the number of people who don’t speak English growing in the UK, we are starting to require services such as translation and interpreting more than ever. This includes when attending doctor’s appointments, purchasing a home and attending court.
A court interpreter has the important job of translating what has been said in the court to an attendee who cannot speak the language. They also work to relay the information delivered by the witness, victim or accused participant. Without a court interpreter, it would be impossible for those appearing in court to understand and give evidence. As a result, the integrity of the trial will be compromised.
Here at Absolute Translations, we use two main methods of court interpreting. One of these is simultaneous interpreting which involves the court interpreter listening to the speaker and relaying the information while they are talking. The other type of court interpreting is consecutive interpretation. This involves the court interpreter speaking once the lawyer or witness has finished speaking. Both methods are perfectly suitable ways of communicating in the court but consecutive interpreting is the most common method.
As the number of non-English speakers in the United Kingdom continues to grow, it is essential to utilise court interpreting services. Here at Absolute Translations, we have a team of qualified linguists who specialise in legal translations and interpreting for the court. Each of our interpreters is a native-speaker of your target language – meaning we are able to provide court interpreting services in over 200 languages. All of our court interpreters are required to have a minimum of five years’ experience and to undergo disclosure checks before joining our team. As a result, we can deliver the highest standard of legal terminology and court interpretation projects.
