Translating A Changing Language

Written Galician is officially Spanish-style (Castilian), in orthographic terms. Official and popular usage, however, can differ—particularly if written content is created by or intended for reintegrationist sources, which believe that the written language of Galicia should be aligned with Portuguese. Old Portuguese and Medieval Galician are identical languages: to align Galician with Portuguese orthography would require new spellings for many Spanish-style Galician words. As a result of these ongoing debates, the Royal Galician Academy modified elements of the language in 2003 to allow Galician-Portuguese word forms that have historical roots in Medieval Galician and are still present in modern Portuguese.
